Preheat the oven to 175°C. Line a muffin tin with paper liners. Prepare chocolate cupcakes following package instructions. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

In a large bowl, beat butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and fluffy.

Transfer approximately one third of the frosting into a separate bowl. Add red food coloring to the remaining frosting in the large bowl and mix until evenly colored.

Using a piping bag fitted with a large star tip, pipe the red frosting onto each cupcake in a tall conical shape resembling a Santa hat. Sprinkle red sanding sugar over the red frosting. Then, with a smaller star tip, pipe white frosting around the base and tip to complete the look.
